Live-action remakes of classic anime titles are the subject of controversy and fan-rage in the anime community – Akira being a rather hot topic on that front, but could this be the saviour we’ve been looking for?
While the original plan for the Akira live-action got shot down fairly rapidly by fans, the adaptation never really disappeared, always lurking in the shadows with an occasional rumour here and there. The latest of which is that Chistopher Nolan of the Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception could be involved in the upcoming Akira live-action from Warner Bros. Could Nolan’s next movie, which is set for release in July 2017, be Akira?
Another interesting rumour, coming from Den of Geek, is that Warner are looking to make a trilogy, rather than a single movie. This would most likely sit very well with fans of the original manga, which only had a small portion adapted for the animated movie. If Christopher Nolan is on board then we can feel safe that the source material will be studied meticulously, we may even receive a complete story if the proposed trilogy goes ahead.
What we know of the live-action Akira movie so far, Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way will be producing alongside Andrew Lazar and Mad Chance. Daredevil Season 2 showrunner Marco J. Ramirez is writing the script.
If any of this came to fruition, confidence in the project will certainly increase but there will always be die-hard fans that will never accept change.
Does Christopher Nolan’s name bring with it confidence or are you still dubious about the whole project? Tell your thoughts in the comments below.
