In This Corner Of The World Named Best Film Of 2016!

In This Corner of the World continues its remarkable commercial and critical run after winning the Hiroshima Film Festival “Peace Award”, “Best Movie” and  “Jury Special Award” at the Yokohama Film Festival and the Takahashi Film Festival “Horizon Award”.

Now Kinema Junpo, one of Japan’s most popular and oldest film magazines has named In This Corner of the World their best film of 2016. Making it the first animated film to claim the top spot in nearly 30 years! – The last animation to reach that spot was My Neighbour Totoro back in 1988.

The good news doesn’t end there, In This Corner of the World‘s director, Sunao Katabuchi, also received the “Best Director Award”.

Being included in the Kinema Junpo awards, (which began in 1926) and their yearly best list is a much deserved and remarkable achievement for this touching and emotional film.

This achievement is even more amazing considering the stiff competition from two other massive commercial and critical successes of the past 12 months, TOHO Studio’s Shin Godzilla and the anime powerhouse, Your Name!

In This Corner of the World

Written by the award-winning manga artist Fumiyo Kouno and directed by Sunao Katabuchi (Mai Mai Miracle), In This Corner of the World follows the story of Suzu, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II.

European film fans can catch the movie at a number of European Film festivals starting in February.
