Five Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Parasyte

Parasyte is a manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki, published between 1988-1995 in Japan. It has since received two recent adaptations in the form of two live action movies and an anime from studio Madhouse. Both are available to purchase now in the UK.

Parasyte

About Parasyte
A series of grizzly murders are occurring around the world. Dubbed the Mincemeat Murders by the press, the authorities have no idea who or what is responsible.

Meanwhile! Average Japanese high school student, Izumi Shinichi discovers an alien parasite living in his right hand. Shinichi calls the parasite Migi, which now has an eye and a mouth and is a sentient being in his own right. Accepting the fact that they now have a symbiotic relationship and that if one of them dies the other will also die, they join forces against the other parasites invading the earth.

Lefty

Parasyte the Maxim

In all iterations of Parasyte, except one, Shinichi Izumi’s right hand is known as Migi, the Japanese word for right. The Tokyopop English manga release however was flipped horizontally (yes they used to do that in the past) and Migi was subsequently named Lefty because he now appeared as Shinichi’s left hand.

Aya Hirano

Parasyte

In the anime adaptation of Parasyte -the maxim- Migi is credited before Shinichi because he is voiced by celebrity voice actress Aya Hirano.

Female Japanese Beat-Boxer

Parasyte

While Aya Hirano voices Migi in the anime his sound effects are handled by a Female Japanese beat-boxer – Rinka Ange.

New Line Cinema

Parasyte the Movie Part 2

At one point New Line Cinema held the rights to adapt the manga into a live-action film, but the project never made it out of development and was ultimately scrapped. However, last year Japan finally made a live-action adaptation.

Studio Ghibli

Parasyte

Probably the most interesting thing in regards to Parasyte adaptation is that Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki where interesting in making an animated film with Studio Ghibli. However due to New Line Cinema owning the film rights at the time neither adaptation came into fruition.
