Will it be Robbie the robot…?
Hollywood blog Deadline reports that DreamWorks is in “early talks” with actress Margot Robbie to play the leading role in a live-action version of Ghost in the Shell. The actress, whose most prominent splash was in the recent Wolf of Wall Street, would be taking the as-yet unnamed role — retaining the name “Motoko Kusanagi” is unlikely, although even in the original manga, that was a pseudonym with resonances equivalent to “Jane Excalibur.”

There have, of course, been many previous rumours about a live-action version of Ghost in the Shell, ever since Steven Spielberg personally got behind the acquisition of the rights in 2008 — if he’s sitting on a seven-year option, then he needs to get something off the ground before 2015. The director currently attached to the project is Rupert Sanders (Snow White & the Huntsman), for a script by William Wheeler (The Reluctant Fundamentalist). But if you were wondering what all the fuss was about, then you can find out for yourself by buying the Blu-ray of the original anime…
Ghost in the Shell, the Limited Edition Steelbook, will be released on UK Blu-ray on 29th September.
