About Knights Of Sidonia

It’s been a thousand years since the Gauna, a strange alien race with no known method of communication, destroyed the solar system. A portion of humanity managed to escape using enormous seed ships like the Sidonia, which have allowed them to maintain the population while drifting through space. Nagate Tanikaze is a young man who has been raised deep in the bowels of the ship. When he goes into training in order to pilot the huge robotic weapons known as Gardes, Nagate is entrusted with piloting the legendary unit known as Tsugumori. He, alongside his fellow pilots, puts his life on the line against the Gauna, in the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity.

The threat against humanity, the Gauna are a truly terrifying existence, they can survive in the vacuum of space and change their form at will. The way the series shows their power really helps create a sense of ever impending doom for the inhabitants of Sidonia.

About The Creator

The author and original creator of Knights of Sidonia, Tsutomu Nihei, has penned a number of hit titles, many gaining a strong cult following and status, including Blame! and Biomega. Knights of Sidonia is currently his longest running work and to date has received two one-cour anime seasons and a movie. Nihei employees a very futuristic and cyberpunk style to his work, often following humanity’s last survivors in the far reaches of the future. There is a wide use of genetics featured within his work, such as cloning, mutations, and synthetic and cybernetic organisms. Nihei originally studied architecture, which later became a huge part of his style, creating huge mega-structures that boggle the mind.

Knights of Sidonia employs many of Nihei’s iconic styles; the anime adaptation from Polygon Pictures goes to great lengths to bring these to life. The way they highlight the fact the characters are clones, and that the cloning process has gone on for many generations is handled very well. We can’t forget to mention the mecha within the series; ‘Gardes’, Sidonia’s only line of defense. These are some of the best designs witnessed in anime, watching them dash around space, while attempting to stop the Gauna leads to some gripping and exciting moments. This release is not one to miss!
