Manga UK: A Year in Pictures

Now that 2017 is just around the corner, we thought we’d take a look back on the past year and share our 2016 highlights! What were yours?

We kicked off 2016 with DBZRF in 3D on January 20th – a pretty explosive start to the year! Did you see it?

In May we ramped up our Comic Con presence with our first ever Anime karaoke stage, hosted by the wonderful Elle Kitty!

The stage and karaoke were more popular than we ever could have hoped, and we had an absolute blast. We also hosted a charity raffle in aid of the Kumamoto Earthquake Relief Fund by GlobalGiving, and ended up raising almost £200 in donations which we then matched to make £400 total!

Over the summer (and throughout the year!), we were working hard on one of our newest projects In This Corner of the World, with our COO Jerome and Marketing Manager Andrew visiting markets and festivals around the world to spread the word.

The film was released in Japanese cinemas in November 12th, and has made $7 million at the box office so far on 92 screens. This year has been fantastic for Japanese animated films both in Japan and abroad, and we hope to make 2017 even better!

On September 21st we held another nationwide theatrical event by putting Akira back in cinemas for one night only! Anime fans up and down the country flocked to see it, and we were overwhelmed by the positive feedback we received.

October Comic Con was bigger and better than ever – we brought back the karaoke stage along with our favourite host…

…and also teamed up with the lovely people that make up the Rooster Teeth UK community to put on a Rooster Teeth cosplay showcase – more than 30 people signed up to strut their stuff on stage with the best cosplayers walking away with some brilliant Rooster Teeth prizes!

Following the success of our May fundraiser, we held a nail painting drive and another raffle in support of Polished Man and raised £200 in support of vulnerable children around the world! Overall, they raised one million dollars for their cause, and we’re grateful to you for being so generous and helping us to be a part of that.

November saw the release of our highly-anticipated Pokémon Movie Steelbook

…and Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages was also a big hit, with people even tweeting us to let us know when they saw it out and about!

2016 has been an extraordinary year for Manga Entertainment and Animatsu, and it’s all thanks to you! Watch out for everything we’ve got coming up next year, including bringing both Ghost in the Shell and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions to UK cinemas (with more theatrical releases planned!), launching In This Corner of the World in festivals around the globe and of course bringing even more stellar anime content to Home Video in the UK.

Thanks for supporting us in 2016 – we’ll see you next year!
