ANIME AT THE OSCARS 2015

Come on Academy, give Takahata his due
Kaguya has plenty to please Oscar voters. Unlike some of Takahata’s films, it’s extremely accessible to Western viewers. As MyM magazine put it, “You watch Takahata’s film and you can hear the underlying millennium-old tale as if it’s being read to you aloud, at bedtime surely, to your childhood self.”

Men in Black

Jonathan Clements on the rise of the ninja
With a gruelling shoot that spanned April 2007 to September 2008 after its leading man’s injury on set, filmed in the sub-tropical heat of Japan’s idyllic Ryukyu island chain, Kamui evokes a savage era where all unwelcome influences were ruthlessly suppressed, and plays with the notion that the Japanese peasantry of the 17th century had formed secret societies of semi-magical assassins.

The History of Evangelion

Andrew Osmond on the prelude to the First Impact
Evangelion started as Neon Genesis Evangelion, a 26-part TV serial in 1995. It used a familiar Japanese plot template: the teenage boy who drives a giant robot (or in Eva’s case, cyborg), using the huge and frightening body to fight monsters and save Earth. The lyrics of the TV song express the myth. “Like an angel without a sense of mercy / Rise young boy to the heavens as a legend!”

Good Luck Girl

Helen McCarthy goes in search of a teenage goddess
Momiji Binboda is no normal teenage girl, but a Goddess of Misfortune sent into the human world to correct a dangerous imbalance in the flow of good fortune and happiness.
Manga Entertainment has the pleasure of announcing that following the success of the recent Akira screenings, they will be bringing the seminal anime classic Ghost in the Shell back to UK cinemas on over 80 screens!
Another MCM London Comic Con has come to an end and we would like to say a huge thank you to all the fans that came to visit the Manga UK booth over the weekend. We had a great time meeting you all and watching you take part in the Anime Karaoke!

FIVE THINGS TO PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE IN JAPAN : PART 2

Jack Neighbour prepares you for life in Japan
Hopefully you found the first three offerings in last weeks part one informative and you’d had ample time to calm your nerves and research a new country to emigrate to. So without further hesitation, let's complete the list.

The Princess and the Pilot

It's chocks away for anime's aerial Ruritania
Anime returns to the heavens in The Princess and the Pilot, a lush romantic aerial adventure from the Madhouse studio.

Psycho-Pass

Who watches the watchmen watching your thoughts...?
Psycho-Pass; the first half of the name should warn you. This is a blend of SF and horror by the studio which brought you Ghost in the Shell, now splicing cyberpunk, police procedural and splatter. There will be blood, and dismembered body parts, and if no-one’s actually eaten a human liver on the show yet, there’s still Psycho-Pass 2 to come.

Attack on Titan: How Will It End?

The second part, and what comes after...
This is the burning question for Attack on Titan fans, and it’s certainly not answered in the second volume of the anime series. Rather, Volume 2 shows a world which is still in the process of expanding, bringing on a great many vivid new characters – and arguably the most vivid of all isn’t even a human, but a sexy woman Titan who stomps all over the series.
