Sengoku Basara: The Last Party

Saturday 2nd November 2013

It’s the final countdown for Sengoku Basara

Sengoku Basara: The Last PartyFollowing the events of the Sengoku Basara TV series, Toyotomi Hideyoshi has fallen before Date Masamune’s incredible six-sword style. However rather than the era of peace he was expecting, Masamune’s victory has lead to the feudal states of Japan falling further into chaos. Even Hideyoshi’s own lieutenants can’t agree on how to proceed given the sudden power vacuum – Ishida Mitsunari swears vengeance, while Tokugawa Ieyasu seeks out Masamune for a peaceful alliance. Elsewhere, Masamune’s frenemy Sanada Yukimura struggles to lead the army left to him by his own late master. When a shadowy political figure manipulates these disparate figures into convening on the plains of Sekigahara, tensions boil over and the future of Japan will be decided in a flurry of blades! But with samurai controlling the elements and wearing armour the size of a tank, don’t expect anything like historical accuracy in this anarchic action epic!

The Battle of Sekigahara referenced in The Last Party was a real conflict, one of the most important in Japanese history. Fought on 21 October 1600, the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s forces lead to his seizing the Shogunate.

Sengoku Basara: The Last Party is available 4th November on UK DVD and Blu-ray from Manga Entertainment.

Matt Kamen sees how fantasy matches reality
The climactic end to Sengoku Basara’s first season saw competing heroes Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune combining forces to defeat the evil warlord Oda Nobunaga. Oda has become a popular figure to demonise in Japanese media – he’s the arch-nemesis in video game developer Capcom’s Onimusha series, as well as Koei’s Samurai Warriors and Nobunaga’s Ambition lines. The anime series Yotoden casts him as a demon in human form, and he even popped up as the final boss in strategy spin-off Pokémon Conquest. With such a bad reputation, he must have been pure evil in real life, right?
