Welcome To Beyond The Boundary

Wednesday 6th January 2016

Love Kyoto Animation as much as we do? Then here’s a title you’ll want for your collection.

Beyond The Boundary
About Beyond the Boundary
The dark fantasy follows a high school sophomore named Akihito Kanbara. Although the boy appears human, he is half youmu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is unique even among members of the spirit world. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

Being directed by Taichi Ishidate, a Kyoto Animation mainstay and Key Animator and Episode Director on Clannad and K-On!, the studio’s unique and signature visual look is firmly intact. Set in a world full of the supernatural, it’s a chance to see KyoAni step away from its usual moe roots and channel the darkness. This modern fantasy tells a beautiful story with a wonderful cast and some dark and terrifying monsters.

MEET THE CHARACTERS:

Akihito Kanbara

Beyond The Boundary
Akihito is a second-year high school student and a half youmu allowing him the ability to quickly heal from wounds, albeit still experiencing the pain. He appears to have a rather unhealthy obsession with ‘bespectacled beauties’. Luckily for him Mirai Kuriyama happens to fit that criteria perfectly, though his healing abilities have found him the subject of Mirai’s target practice.

Mirai Kuriyama

Beyond The Boundary
Mirai is a first-year high school student and along with her red-rimmed glasses falls on the wrong side of Akihito’s obsession with ‘bespectacled beauties’. Her unique ability to manipulate her blood allows her to take on the constant threat of the youmu. Her troubled past has led to her being unable to trust others and a fear of killing youmu.

Mitsuki Nase

Beyond The Boundary
Mitsuki is a second-year high school student who loves teasing Akihito, she also happens to be the President of the Literary Club. Her family, the Nase clan govern over Spirit World Warriors in their city.

Hiroomi Nase

Beyond The Boundary
Hiroomi is a third-year high school student and Mitsuki's older brother. He wears a scarf even inside due to his supernatural abilities that make him sensitive to the cold. Hiroomi, like his sister, is proficient at setting up barriers or cages to prevent youmu from entering a protected area.

MIRAI MIZUE AND JAPANESE ART ANIMATION

Jasper Sharp on how wonders will never cease
The tradition of the solitary animator continued past the establishment of an anime industry, with notable luminaries such as Yoji Kuri, Kihachiro Kawamoto and Tadanari Okamoto positioning themselves outside it and creating works that challenged what could be done with the medium, often using other media such as stop-motion and silhouette.
