The Himouto! Umaru-chan Cafe

The Good Smile Company X Animate collaboration cafe in Akihabara is currently running a ‘Himouto! Umaru-chan’ theme.

I was lucky enough to visit the cafe; as a huge fan of the anime, I was pretty excited.

The cafe was heaven for any Umaru fan, with televisions displaying clips from the anime, the OST playing in the background, and of course the tables were decorated too.

The menu featured many different things, such as pizza, steak, pasta, a sundae and even an Umaru snack plate. Furthermore, each drink was based on a different character.

We decided on the Ebina-chan and Sylphyn themed drinks. The Ebina drink was peach soda with strawberry popping tapioca pearls, strawberry chocolate hearts and topped with cream. It was very tasty, as well as pretty! Sylphyn’s drink was a blue soda which has a light bubble gum flavour. It also came with the candy yogurt that Sylphyn loves so much.

To eat we got Onii-chan’s steak, this was vegetable rice with steak, mushrooms and a fried egg on top, and apparently it was pretty good! I had the Umaru hamster pancake. It came with orange ice cream, fruit, syrup and cream! It was tasty, not to mention super cute! With each drink you order, you receive a random coaster, with each meal you order, you receive a random bookmark.

After eating there were various other things to see and do. On the stage there was a recreation of Umaru at home, as well as a purikura machine, which was slightly pricey at 700 yen (£4). There was also a sticker making machine. For 300 yen (£1.50) you can choose a picture, enter your name, and it will print cute customised stickers for you.

If you’re lucky enough while you’re there, the staff will play a mini game with you. For us it was a Jan-ken-pon (Rock-Paper-Scissors) contest. If you win, you get to use the sticker machine for free, not a bad deal!

That’s not all, there were even limited goods available in the shop and gashapon machines containing badges.

Overall, the cafe had a great atmosphere, it’s clear a lot of hard work and effort went into its creation. The little things to do around the cafe made it feel extra special. If you happen to be in Tokyo and are a fan of Himouto! Umaru-chan, make sure you pay a visit.
