Top 5 Yu-Gi-Oh! Duels

With Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side Of Dimensions heading to UK cinemas this week and the entirety of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series now available on DVD in the UK – We thought it was the perfect time to share with you our favourite duels from these five seasons.

We know you’ll all have different favourites, so please share them with us via Twitter and Facebook.

Honourable Mention –
Yugi vs. Duke Devlin (Dungeon Dice Monsters)

Honourable Mention - Yugi vs. Duke Devlin
An honourable mention goes out to the game of Dungeon Dice Monsters that Yugi and Duke Devlin played at the end of season 1. We wanted to stick to duels involving Duel Monsters specifically for our favourites, but it would be unfair not to mention this particular face off. In this 44 turn duel, Yugi faces off with Duke in order to rescue Joey from being Duke’s servant. However, if Duke wins, Yugi is never to play Duel Monsters again. Considering Yugi has no prior knowledge of this game beforehand, (Duke having invented it) it’s impressive to see him turn the tides in his favour, achieving a splendid victory with Dark Magician’s Dark Magic Attack.

5 – Yugi vs. Kaiba (Pre-Duelist Kingdom)

After Yugi’s grandfather refuses to sell Kaiba his rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon card he is abducted and forced to duel Kaiba – resulting in a loss. Yugi and his friends head to KaibaCorp, and the duel between the two begins. By turn 18, Yugi has collected the four limbs of Exodia in his hand, and in turn 22 he impressively draws Exodia the Forbidden One, enabling Yugi to attack Kaiba and all of his monsters to reduce his life points to 0.

4 – Yugi vs. Joey vs. Kaiba vs. Marik (Battle City Finals)

Episodes 122 through 124 – treated us to a four-way free-for-all duel between Yugi, Joey, Kaiba, and Marik in order to decide the Battle City tournament Semi-Final pairings. With the first two duelists to lose being pitted against each other in the first Semi-Final match, the four duelists are able to influence who they’ll be facing by planning their attacks. Between Kaiba’s brutal tactics and Marik causing chaos throughout, how could this not make our list?

3 – Yugi vs. Joey (Battle City)

In this duel during Battle City, best friends Joey and Yugi are up against each other. However, Joey is being controlled by the evil Marik; on top of this, he and Yugi are chained to an anchor hanging above the site of the duel. The winner’s key will be unlocked allowing them to remove their chains, whilst the loser is to be dragged into the sea forever. If the time limit is hit, both duelists are drowned. It was an extremely tense and memorable battle.

2 – Yugi vs. Pegasus (Duelist Kingdom)

The duel between Yugi and Pegasus in Duelist Kingdom, during episodes 35 through 39, features some spectacular cheating from the creator of the Duel Monsters card game. In order to finally free his grandfather from the card he is trapped within, Yugi faces Pegasus in the final duel of Duelist Kingdom. Like Yugi, Pegasus possesses a Millennium Item, the Millennium Eye; he uses this to read Yugi’s mind during the duel, allowing him to perfectly counter his moves. This one would’ve easily been our favourite duel, if it wasn’t for…

1 – Yugi vs. Atem (Dawn of the Duel)

The final duel in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is one that is enough to bring anyone to tears; it allows the pharaoh to finally move on, and brings the series to an end after 5 seasons, 224 episodes. In this duel, both Yugi and Atem battle as equals, with decks that perfectly reflect their very souls. Atem’s deck is full of the cards we’ve seen time and time again through the 5 seasons, while Yugi’s deck features newer cards that fittingly rely on each other for support. Yugi is able to defeat Atem, and thus facilitate his passing on, by negating the resurrection of the Slifer the Sky Dragon god card and simply summoning a monster to attack him, and his 200 remaining life points directly. It’s impossible not to be moved by this duel, and we were thrilled to watch it again on DVD.
