Today we question Animatsu and Manga UK’s Marketing Manager, Andrew Hewson.

Andrew has been working in the film industry for over 6 years and has worked on a number of huge titles whilst at Manga/Animatsu including: Halo: NightfallAttack on TitanSword Art OnlineMadoka Magica, and Death Note. Recently he has brought the smash-hit movies Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and Boruto: Naruto The Movie to UK cinemas.

Q. What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?

A. The best thing is probably how diverse my job is, not only do I get to work on some great releases, but I get to visit comic conventions around Europe, have face to face interaction with the fans and also speak on panels. The travel aspect as well, I get to go around the world visiting different film markets and meet some amazing people along the way. In addition, with the current direction Animatsu is heading, more cool and interesting opportunities will be made available to me next year!

Q. What has been the most memorable and exciting anime release for you?

A. It has to be the theatrical releases of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ and Boruto: Naruto The Movie. They both exceeded our expectations and we were so overwhelmed by the fan support. It was our first foray into big theatrical and I’m so glad it really paid off. I had so much fun working on a these projects and I can’t wait to see how the Attack on Titan live-action movies do.

Q. Which upcoming release are you most looking forward to?

A. Perfect segue from the last question! I’m looking forward to the Attack on Titan movies, Yakuza Apocalypse and going into next year all the great new shows we have recently licensed – Akame Ga Kill, Parasyte The Maxim, One Punch Man and Is it Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon? Finally getting Eva 3 out for the fans is exciting as well – only took 2 years!

Q. Fans are really excited about Akame ga Kill Part 1’s Collector’s Edition, when can we get our hands on it?

A. This is out on 7th March but you can pre-order it on Amazon now. I should add that the deluxe edition is extremely limited so I would suggest ordering yours now or you could miss out! It will also come out on standard DVD and Blu–ray, in case the collector’s edition doesn’t wet your appetite.

Q. Can you share with us any new titles? Or just drop us a hint!

A. Yeah, I could share a little something with you… It’s an anime about an intelligent and beautiful 16 year old girl, who lives with her brother. However, at home she totally changes. Guessed it yet?

Fan Questions:

Florence Trask:

Q. I love the old Manga UK podcasts you guys all used to do. Any chance of bringing that back?

A. I’d love to bring that back – they involved a lot of work but were a lot of fun though! Since starting Animatsu and taking back Manga, Jerome and I have been extremely busy but we have discussed bringing the podcast back next year so watch this space!

Nico Bugdoll:

Q. Is there any official way to make requests for titles to be licensed. You pretty much license all the animes I love in the last years, but it would still be nice.

A. We’re really happy to hear that we license everything you love. We can’t really make promises, but if you email we will be able to look into it! Alternatively you can always bug Fraser and I on Twitter @AJHewson and @FMBurst.

Q. How did you become involved with Manga and-of-course Animatsu?

A. That involves quite a long story but I’ll try to keep it short. I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when Jerome came in… oh wait 😉

In all seriousness, I had heard from a mutual friend that Jerome was looking to hire an intern to help him out for a few weeks, so I sent him my CV and thankfully he liked what he saw so asked me to come in. My temporary placement eventually turned into a full time job. I was there for 5 years, moving my way up through the ranks and then last year Jerome and I decided to leave (which has been well documented) and start Animatsu. Then several months after our departure, Starz who owned Manga decided to sell the business to Managing Director, Colin Lomax, and this paved the way for the company to become an independent UK business.

It soon became apparent that both Animatsu and Manga could work harmoniously together –  Animatsu needed a distributor for their titles and Manga (after losing Jerome & I) needed help with acquisitions and marketing. With a strong relationship still intact between both of us, the decision was made to begin merging operations. So that’s what we did and where we are today!

We will be interviewing Andrew again soon, to get more announcements and gossip about what goes on at both Manga UK and Animatsu. If you would like to ask Andrew a question, send us an email at and we will include it next time!
