ASK ANDREW #002
We asked you to send us your #AskAndrew questions for our Marketing Manager Andrew Hewson, and you definitely delivered! We’ve picked our favourites and quizzed Andrew on the inner workings of Manga UK/Animatsu, so read on for a behind-the-scenes look and some exciting announcements.
Which recent release have you been most excited about?
That would definitely be Evangelion 3.33. Fans have been waiting to get their hands on this for such a long time and we appreciate how patient everyone has been over the last 2 years – feels great to finally be getting it out! This has not been a particularly easy license and we’ve worked extremely hard to get you the best quality release possible. Another title I’m excited about is Haikyu!!, it’s a remarkable series about volleyball with wonderful characters and fantastic animation. You guys should give it a chance, especially if you would like to see more sports anime come out in the UK!
Is there any additional information you’d like to share about upcoming releases?
Yes… Unfortunately, Kaze’s release of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled has been pushed back, the new date is currently TBC. I know a lot of you are waiting for this and we apologise to any fans this may have inconvenienced. As soon as we know more from Kaze on its status we will update everyone with the new date.
Hello! When’s the live-action #AttackOnTitan out on Blu-Ray/DVD? Had SUCH a blast with that at @ThePCCLondon – from @mjpwriter
Glad you enjoyed it on the big screen! I’m happy to say that Attack on Titan Movie 1 will be out on June 27. It’ll be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Limited Edition Steelbook. Movie 2 will shortly follow on July 25 and shall also come out as a Limited Edition Steelbook. Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook feeds for artwork reveal and pre-order information.
Do you consider bringing back some older series? – from @Ranger1222
We are always open to bringing back some older series, given that there is an appetite of course from the fans. We tried it last year with Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and we are currently releasing Yu-Gi-Oh as well, but our main focus at this point is more on new series/films.
How did you first get into the anime industry? What advice do you have for the rest of us who may consider getting into doing what you do? – from @Tmckinnin
I answered the first part of your question in the last Ask Andrew, which you can read here. Getting into the UK film industry can be very difficult – let alone the anime industry, as it’s even smaller. There are only a few anime distributors in the UK – ourselves (Manga/Animatsu), MVM and Anime Limited. You could include Studio Canal but they only tend to release one Ghibli film every few years and now that Hayao Miyazaki has retired that output will be even less. They have Mamoru Hosoda’s new film, The Boy and The Beast, so it will be interesting to see what they do with that!
I digress… First off you need to live in or around London, as that’s where nearly all media companies are based. If you don’t have any experience in the industry, then you will most likely have to do some form of work experience or an internship – these are usually unpaid but sometimes they will cover your travel and food costs. The one thing I would recommend is finding each company you are interested in, catering a CV and cover letter specifically to them and physically handing them into their office. Putting a face to a name will always be more effective than an impersonal email. You never know, yours might end up going to the top of the internship pile! It is also tremendously helpful to know someone that works in the industry who can put in a good word and vouch for you!
What’s the best anime to watch for a great action packed story-line? – from Aaron Campbell
Black Lagoon is a great action anime! If you’re looking for something that’s really over the top then High School Of The Dead is a must watch. More recently we’ve released A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun, both of which have great stories and brilliant action sequences. Our upcoming release, Akame ga Kill! is also pretty action-packed so you could give that a go.
What’s up with Fairy Tail DVD & Blu Ray releases in the UK? Any plans to continue? – from @Holocat_Zer0
Sadly we no longer hold the Fairy Tail license, so you’ll have to ask Funimation what their UK release plans are going forward.
What is the best-selling Manga/Animatsu release of all time? (as of now) – from @BillHindmarchJR
I believe that Akira and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are two of our best-selling movies of all time. Death Note, Naruto and Dragon Ball are probably our best-selling shows, and Ghost in the Shell is a best-seller across both series and movies.
Will you be licensing [insert show here]? – from many people
The licensing process can be very complicated, and unfortunately, for a numbers of reasons, we can’t always license every show that we or the fans would like. Rest assured though, we do our absolute best to try and bring you the all the top titles we possibly can! We are very passionate about what we do and I hope this translates through in the quality of releases we put out.
If you could be any anime character who would you be, AND why? – from Mirren Sunderland
I would have to choose Goku, why? Well… I could turn Super Saiyan, fly and teleport… I would be able go anywhere I wanted, whenever I wanted. Plus, and probably best of all, I‘d avoid the London commute to the office!
