Ghost Of Tsushima: Samurai Anime You Must Watch!

By Stephanie Ijoma

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ samurai-inspired anime? From the traditional standoffs to the emotional family feuds and the journey the protagonist takes you on to avenge his people, you cannot deny how greatly important these shows are for the anime fans and the representation of Japanese culture.

With the recent celebration of Sucker Punch Studios; Ghost of Tsushima, this action-adventure samurai-based game is reminiscent of a lot of anime shows that you all need to know about if you don’t already. Whilst engrossing in the gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima, it felt as though you are watching a masterpiece of a movie. Not only that, but the story, themes, and production behind Ghost of Tsushima paint the memories of these Samurai anime.

Afro Samurai

We cannot start this without firstly recommending Afro Samurai. This short but amazing anime was created by none other than Takashi Okazaki. Fun fact; Takashi Okazaki who is the creator of Afro Samurai, was assigned to the beautiful special art posters for Ghost of Tsushima. Afro Samurai not only does a fantastic job in giving you a jam-packed adventure in a short amount of time, the soundtrack from RZA of the WU-Tang Clan, art style, and message that this anime brings to you will have you wanting more. Afro Samurai brings representation to a whole new level. It is amazing to see a black lead samurai powering through many obstacles throughout his journey. Afro Samurai is highly spoken about in the conversations when you discuss heavy-hitting samurai animes to watch.

Rurouni Kenshin

Next we have our very own cult classic, Rurouni Kenshin. Kenshin and Tsushima couple up together as they bring traditional and historic themes in their story which represents the culture of Japan, even years later, Kenshin is still very well received amongst the anime industry. The story is very well written, emotional and allows the viewers to grow a sense of attachment towards the show. If you’re looking for something that has a mix of romance, drama, action, and comedy then this anime is for you.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Shigurui is an anime for people who want a serious and intense storyline, mature themes, and who love a gory samurai scene too. Shigurui does not hold back and it’s one anime that provides the balance between a great story and non-stop action. Ghost of Tsushima has its fair share of blood and gore – if you love that, then Shigurui: Death Frenzy is for you. The love and care that has gone into both of these titles adds to their similarities.
