Our Favourite Dragon Ball Z Battles
With the Dragon Ball Z Blu-ray releases on the way, we take a look at our favourite battles from Dragon Ball Z. Here’s what some of the Manga team and writers have to say:
Darcy Giles
Goku vs. Frieza
For me, this is one of the biggest and best battles in Dragon Ball Z! It shows the worst of Frieza and the very best of Goku – him not wanting to finish Frieza off is such a great scene. Also, Goku turning Super Saiyan for the first time is the show’s defining moment. From the way it was directed, to the music, the battle with Frieza will always be my favourite.

Gohan vs. Cell
Dragon Ball Z was my favourite show growing up, I remember racing home from school to watch it every evening on TV, having to choose just one fight is really difficult. It’s close, but I think Gohan vs. Cell has to be my all-time favourite. It contains not one, but two of the greatest scenes in the Dragon Ball franchise: the fantastic moment when Gohan went Super Saiyan 2, followed by the unforgettable Father-Son Kamehameha.
Nick Cooney
Goku vs. Vegeta
Any fight involving Vegeta will always be an instant favourite of mine, although this fight doesn’t include the awesome Super Saiyan transformations, it’s still a classic. “It’s over 9,000” originates here and it’s the first time we see Vegeta in action, as well as his awe-inspiring great ape transformation. It set the series on a path of ever increasing over the top battles, but it still stands toe to toe with any of them.

Vegito vs. Buu
It might be the tail-end of the series, but Dragon Ball Z never faltered. When Goku and Vegeta are on the ropes and realise that they must fuse if they want to stand a chance against Super Buu, who has absorbed the majority of their family and friends, they come together to create Vegito. With a loud “alright!”, you know Vegito is about to lay down the hurt on Super Buu. The lead-up to the fusion, where Goku shouts at Vegeta that their loved ones can’t even die whilst trapped in Buu’s body, will always give me chills.
