The Madoka Magica Movies Are Finally Here!

With all three of the Madoka Magica Movies available on DVD and Blu-ray now in the UK, it’s the perfect time to take a quick look at the franchise.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

While working on the Hidamari Sketch and Bakemonogatari anime series, frequent SHAFT director Akiyuki Shinbo discussed his desire to develop a new magical girl series with Aniplex producer Atsuhiro Iwakami. In the early stages of planning the series, it was decided that the series would be an original anime to allow more freedom in the directing; additionally, the series was planned to appeal to more than just the usual magical girl genre’s audience.

The franchise started with a televised anime series that was broadcast from January through April 2011. The series was produced by popular animation studio SHAFT, the studio that recently brought us Nisekoi. Akiyuki Shinbou directed the series and, later, the films. Announced in November 2011, the first two films were released theatrically in October of 2012. These films adapted the twelve episode series; Beginnings covers the first eight episodes, and Eternal covers the remaining four. Rather than just simply re-cut the series, some scenes were expanded with all-new animation and voices were re-recorded. Thankfully, the staff and cast returned for the films. The same month, the series was released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray.

October 2013 saw the third part of the film trilogy released in Japanese cinemas. Rather than adapt content from the TV series, this movie serves as a sequel to the events that transpired in the series and films, bringing an end to the anime aspect of the franchise. Now, finally, all three films are out in the UK meaning you’re able to enjoy the entirety of the Madoka Magica anime.
