What is a Devil Fruit?
Despite the scary name, Devil Fruit isn’t the fruit of the Devil. They are mystical fruits that, when eaten, grant you incredible abilities. The downside? You lose the ability to swim, which is fairly fatal if you’re sailing the blue seas!
There are three types of Devil Fruit, each offering different abilities.
Paramecia are the most common types of Devil Fruit, and they bestow superpowered abilities that resemble those of a superhero. Levitation, being able to create powerful shockwaves and being able to modify your own body, such as Luffy being able to stretch his rubber-like limbs, and Robin being able to replicate body parts. You’ll see a lot of characters who’ve consumed a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, but enemies still struggle to contend with our rubbery protagonist!
Logia is the next type of Devil Fruit, and among the rarest. This allows the user to create, control, and turn themselves into an element. You’ll see this with Smoker and smoke, and Crocodile and sand, but there are many examples throughout the series as the Straw Hats get closer to their goal. A Logia-type user has to be able to create, control and transform, and whilst many users can do two of the three things, only a small handful are able to actually do all three.
Zoan allows a user to turn into an animal. There are different stypes of Zoan, known as Ancient, Mythical and Artificial, which grant different but similar properties.
Ancient Zoan allows the user to turn into an extinct beast such as a dinosaur or a mammoth, and they’re generally much stronger than other Zoan-types.
Mythical Zoan, you guessed it, allows the user to turn into a mythical beast. A dragon, a phoenix, and even the eight-headed snake Yamata no Orochi, you name it! Mythical Zoan is the rarest Zoan Devil Fruit, and their amazing abilities are highly sought after.
Artificial Zoan is last but not least of the Zoans, and is the result of people trying to create their own Devil Fruits, rather than finding a naturally created one. Of course, this means that things don’t always go to plan, and further research is needed to perfect this type of Devil Fruit.
A few of the Straw Hat Pirates have eaten a Devil Fruit—but not all of them. Let’s take a look at what secret powers they’re wielding, shall we?
Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi Devil Fruit—yes, that’s why many of his moves have “Gomu Gomu!” in them. Eating this granted Luffy a body made entirely of rubber. It is his quick thinking and battle prowess that allows him to use this to its full ability, as he contorts his body in aggressive ways in battle. It also allows him to take more damage than a normal human, and he can even conduct electricity.
Tony Tony Chopper once was an ordinary reindeer until he came across the Hito Hito no Mi Devil Fruit, and he suddenly found himself able to transform into a more human-like form, complete with human intelligence, the ability to talk and to do more human-like things. He’s able to transform into other reindeer-hybrid forms, which allow him to participate in battle.
Robin ate the Hana Hana no Mi, and now she’s able to replicate parts of her own body and make them sprout from the surface of any living thing—that’s a scary thought, isn’t it? Robin has to remain fighting fit as her own strength and reaction times are replicated in her extra limbs, meaning that she would struggle with an opponent faster than herself. However, this is one of the more useful Devil Fruits in day to day life—imagine how easy it would be to do the weekly shopping!
Brook ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi, which gave him a second chance at life after his death. This only works once, though, so don’t be careless, Brook! Thankful for him, being a skeleton, the Devil Fruit allows him to live again without organs, and it’ll repair his body if he’s hurt. He learns a few more tricks, but you’ll have to find them out for yourselves.
